Wastecycle won a prestigious environmental award thanks to the success of our innovative City Recycling Scheme.
The Silver National Green Apple Award for Waste Management sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Waste Management was presented to Wastecycle’s Chairman, Mike Shearstone and Quality and Environment Manager, Daniel Shearstone, by Professor David Bellamy O.B.E, at a special ceremony at the House of Commons.
The City Recycling Scheme was launched in April 2006, in partnership with the East Midlands Development Agency, to increase the recycling of waste arising from the small and medium sized businesses in Nottingham City. Previously, this service had only been available to domestic households through local council collection services or larger organisations.
Initially, the one year pilot scheme aimed to sign up 50 businesses in Nottingham City to increase the city’s recycling rate and raise recycling and environmental awareness amongst Nottingham’s business community. Between April 2006 and April 2007, 377 tonnes of recycled material has been diverted from landfill and 126 companies joined the Scheme. Wastecycle have continued to develop the scheme and there are now 167 companies in the Scheme and continued growth is expected.
The Green Apple Awards are organised by the Green Organisation, an independent, non political, non activist, non profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. Approximately 550 nominations were entered this year and 60 Awards presented.
Wastecycle’s achievement demonstrates our continued commitment to increasing recycling rates and reducing the landfill burden in the region.
